Education for Sanitary Workers' Children

Children of municipal sanitary workers grow up in poverty cycles their parents couldn't escape. We provide daily coaching, study materials, and nutrition support — so their story ends differently.

KANAVU PADIKATTU

In Trichy's underserved slums, children fall behind without after-school support. Our evening centres give them the one-on-one attention government schools can't. Dreams don't wait — and neither do we.

Years on the Ground

In 2012, Mr. R. Dinesh Kumar — a trained social worker with an MSW degree — began serving roadside elders and mentally ill individuals in Trichy with no funding, no office, and no team. Just a belief that humans exist for one another.

What started as evening coaching for 80 underprivileged children in Sempattu slum grew into a full-fledged registered trust serving children, women, elders, and refugees across Tamil Nadu.

R. Dinesh Kumar

Founder & Managing Trustee

In 2014, he joined Action Aid India to work on bonded labour and HIV-affected children's education in Chennai. By 2015, he led as Project Manager at Lebara Foundation — implementing the Sri Lankan refugee children development project with the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Today Manitham Trust runs 5 active programmes, has served 23,000+ individuals, rescued 500 wandering elders, and reduced refugee children's dropout rate from 450 to just 80.

Our Goal Is to Educate

Since 2012, Manitham Trust has been running evening study centres for the most marginalised children in Trichy and surrounding areas. Children of manual scavengers, sanitary workers, daily wage labourers, and Sri Lankan refugees — children the system has consistently failed.

KANAVU PADIKATTU does not just teach academics. It provides a safe space, a warm meal, emotional support, and a caring adult in the life of a child who often has none. Every child enrolled is monitored individually — their attendance, nutrition, and academic progress tracked and reported.

Our Goal — Every Woman Financially Independent and Socially Respected.

PUTHUMAI PENGAL was built on a single observation — women in Trichy's most marginalised communities have enormous strength but no opportunity. Widowed women, abandoned women, and women from below-poverty-line families are capable of far more than their circumstances suggest.

Through free tailoring training, employment support, and awareness education on menstruation, gender equality, personal freedom, and women's rights — PUTHUMAI PENGAL gives these women not just a skill but a voice. Every 8th of March, Manitham recognises outstanding women from these communities with memorial shields and public awards — because recognition matters as much as training.

Who We Serve

Widowed women, orphaned women, abandoned women, and women from below-poverty-line families aged 18 to 60 across Trichy and surrounding districts — with priority given to those with no income or family support.

What We Provide

Free tailoring and textile sewing training, residential accommodation, employment placement support, self-employment guidance, awareness education on women's rights and health, and annual public recognition on Women's Day.

Our Impact

Over 20 women have gained financial independence through this programme. Their children continue education uninterrupted — breaking the poverty cycle one family at a time. Women trained here go on to run their own small businesses and employ others in their communities.
